On 10/31, faced with the DA's office re-filing charges against her, Laura Valencia accepted a plea bargain deal. She has pleaded to one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and will serve an informal 1-year probation, pay a $100 fine, and serve 20 hours community service in a veterinary clinic. *****GOOD NEWS!!!******
Salvador Barrera has been found:
GUILTY of 1 count felony animal cruelty for the starvation/death of "YiYo,"
GUILTY of 1 count misdemeanor animal cruelty for the starvation of "Morna" (aka Katie)
GUILTY of 1 count misdemeanor animal cruelty for the starvation of "BearCup" (aka Jack)
HUNG JURY (10-2) on the 1 misdemeanor animal cruelty charge for the neglect of the dog.
Laura Valencia has been found (update 11/1 --- Laura Valencia, facing new charges, pleaded guilty to one count cruelty):
HUNG JURY (11-1) on 1 count felony animal cruelty for the starvation/death of "YiYo,"
HUNG JURY (11-1) on 1 count misdemeanor animal cruelty for the starvation/death of "Morna" (aka Katie)
HUNG JURY (11-1) on 1 count misdemeanor animal cruelty for the starvation/death of "BearCup" (aka Jack)
HUNG JURY on 1 count misdemeanor animal cruelty for the dog.
The jury was obviously frustrated with the one dissenting juror. They were unable to reach a verdict in any of the charges relating to Laura Valencia (but look how close they came...). The DA's office is considering re-filing charges against Ms. Valencia. We will update you about this.
HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS!!!! A very surprised Salvador Barrera was remanded into custody immediately after the verdict was read. He was handcuffed and taken away!!! He will most likely stay in the Sonoma County jail **without bail** until sentencing on November 26. For many, November 26 is a special date ---- it marks one year, to the day, since "YiYo's" cruel death at the hands of Salvador Barrera.
The maximum penalty for felony animal cruelty is three years in prison. We are told that there's a very slim chance that Salvador Barrera will serve time in state prison. Most likely, he will receive some county jail time. We are hoping that Mr. Barrera will ultimately receive lengthly probation, during which he will not be allowed to own animals.
